It is understood detainees could be selected on the basis of their nationality, with those from designated "safe" countries being processed within days. This would be similar to the UK system, where those believed most likely to have a groundless claim - including men from certain countries - are held in closed reception centres while their papers are examined.
"In overall terms, approximately 90 per cent of applicants are shown not to be in need of protection following a rigorous examination of their cases, whilst in regard to some nationalities, this figure can be much higher," the spokeswoman said.
Officials argue that the use of detention is recognised internationally as a tool in deterring unfounded claims for refugee status and say the proposals would bring Ireland into line with other EU states such as Denmark, the UK and The Netherlands.... [link]

This government is always fumbling about with their 'plans'. A careful nudge from IBEC means many don't make it off the drawing board.
makes total sense...let in a asylum seeker....they will dissapear....or he will find the first irish woman he meets and get her pregnant...then he says he has to stay because of an irish born child...check out the case of the 23 year old chap from ghana who "fell in love" with the 40 something widow of the traveller who was killed in mayo..frog ward...she got pregnant and he got a visa....!!

More than 100,000 Chinese live here already
More than 100,000 Chinese live in Ireland, many working in retail and service areas.
The recent census found there are just 11,000 Chinese living in Ireland, but it is widely believed the figure is actually as high as 100,000, with thousands working illegally in jobs, having stayed on after student visas ran out.
The Government have also declared that the census figures are a "serious underestimate" of the number of foreign nationals actually living in the State.
